The professor shot and killed at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill on Monday had ties to the Capital Region.

Zijie Yan got his Ph.D from RPI back in 2011.

The shooting caused the campus to shut down as police searched for the suspect.

A 34-year-old man was caught and charged with first-degree murder.

“Dr. Yan shined a bright light during his time at RPI,” said the school in a statement. “Our faculty who worked alongside him remember him as bright, curious, and hardworking.”
