CLIFTON PARK – At least 20 people are without a place to live, after a large fire tore through their homes.

The fire broke out around 1 p.m. Monday at the Mohawk Terrace Apartments in Clifton Park.

Flames were intense and they spread rapidly through the three-story wood-framed building.

There were 24 units in the building. Twenty-two of them were occupied. Everyone got out safely, but the damage is extreme. Many tenants lost all of their belongings.

Fire crews battled the blaze for hours on a hot summer afternoon, chasing it through the older building.

Fire Chief Ed Tremblay says some firefighters suffered minor heat-related injuries.

The Red Cross is helping the displaced people.

The cause remains under investigation.
