Firefighter’s fight for early retirement nears resolution
The plan for fellow firefighters to donate their unused vacation and sick time to a fellow firefighter with Alzheimer's may now move forward.
Glens Falls city leaders previously seemed to suggest that donating unusual sick or vacation time to a coworker was illegal. Now Glens Falls Mayor Bill Collins says he will do everything within his power to make sure Fire Lieutenant Doug Holl receives the full pension benefits he believes Holl deserves.
As NewsChannel 13 previously reported, Holl was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s a little more than a year ago, abruptly ending his firefighting career two years shy of the mandatory 20-years of service required to earn full benefits.
When fellow firefighters offered to donated their unused benefit hours so that Holl could reach the 20-year plateau, the city initially balked.
