FIRST ON 13: Man charged in fatal Northway crash to admit to lesser charge

The man accused of murder in the death of a Ballston Spa woman is planning to plead guilty to a lesser charge on Tuesday.

Vasu Laroiya was charged with murder in the May 2022 death of Katryn “Katie” Fisher. Laroiya was drunk and speeding when he crashed his Tesla into Fisher’s car on the Northway in Colonie on May 28, 2022, according to police and prosecutors.

NewsChannel 13 has learned that Laroiya, who is from New Jersey and has two DWI convictions in that state, will plead guilty Tuesday to aggravated vehicular homicide.

That charge carries a maximum sentence of eight and a third to 25 years.

Lee Kindlon, Laroiya’s attorney, couldn’t comment on Monday, but acknowledged that he’ll be in court Tuesday morning with his client.

Katie Fisher was just 22 and had just finished her junior year at UAlbany.

Laroiya’s trial was scheduled to begin next week.
