The name on the Philip J. Schuyler Achievement Academy in Albany was removed from the front of the school on Clinton Avenue Thursday morning.

NewsChannel 13 was the only station there when the metal sign with Schuyler’s name was officially taken off the elementary school on Clinton Avenue.

It’s the second step in an effort to reckon with Schuyler’s past as one of the largest owner of enslaved people in the city. In June, NewsChannel 13’s Subrina Dhammi was first to report that the statue of General Schuyler was taken down from outside Albany City Hall.

The school will be renamed the Roots Academy at West Hill, with a sign unveiling and ribbon cutting planned for the start of the school year.

The Schuyler name on the back of the school will be removed Friday.
