Fort Edward considers dissolving police department

The future of the police department in the village of Fort Edward is now in question, after a special meeting.

If the village opted to get rid of the police department, they would rely on the sheriff’s office and state police.

This comes as a possible solution for the understaffed department, which is currently operating with only three full-time officers.

You may remember, in January, former Police Chief Justin Derway and Police Sergeant Dean Watkins were placed on administrative leave after charges were filed against them, claiming they falsified police records.

There is currently no timeline for the contract and it would have to go before the Washington County Board of Supervisors before being approved.

The mayor says they would also hold a public hearing before any decisions are made.
