The funeral for former Bishop Howard Hubbard – the longest serving bishop in the country – took place on Friday at St. Pius X Church in Loudonville.

Thousands of people came to the church to pay their respects.

Hubbard, 84, served as bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany for 37 years. He retired in 2014, when he reached the mandatory retirement age of 75.

Hubbard was known as a man of compassion and conviction – especially when it came to advocating for peace and social justice and caring for the poor and marginalized members of our community.

He was also a very complex and controversial figure. At the time of his death, there were seven lawsuits still pending with his name listed as a defendant.

Current Bishop Edward Scharfenberger presided over the funeral mass.
