“What does this mean? It means more of the chips that Lockheed Martin needs for their systems that keep our country safe, keep our troops safe, will be stamped ‘Made in New York’ by GlobalFoundries and Capital Region workers,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D – NY).

Schumer said his CHIPS & Science Act helped bring about the expansion of domestic chip manufacturing, and that this collaboration will make the supply chain more secure and reliable.

“The pandemic showed us a whole lot of things, but one of them is that we can’t rely on supply chains that are overseas,” Schumer said. “Now more than ever, we have to invest in building domestic supply chains of semiconductors and other critical technology. Particularly when it comes to our own security, our own national defense, how can we rely on out-of-country supply chains?”

The partnership means that chips Lockheed Martin uses in some of the most sensitive defense and aerospace systems will be made by Capital Region workers.

“Lockheed’s new ASIC design capabilities, their ability to do their own designs, will be complemented with GF’s deep expertise in secure chip manufacturing on feature-rich innovation and differentiated technologies,” said Dr. Thomas Caulfield, president and CEO of GlobalFoundries.

Lockheed Martin President and CEO Jim Taiclet said our national defense needs the most advanced chip technologies and highest cybersecurity.

“And this partnership is also going to deliver on the critical need that we have to make sure that we can deter aggression in the future, because if we don’t have the most high-performing platforms at enough scale, we don’t want to see another Ukraine happen in our lifetimes.”
