A groundbreaking was held Wednesday morning for an energy transmission superhighway in the Capital Region.

Gov. Kathy Hochul was in Whitehall to help kick off construction of the Champlain Hudson Power Express.

The 330-mile line will transport hydroelectric power from Quebec to New York City. Much of the line will be buried in either Lake Champlain or the Hudson River, but 47 miles of it will be buried in Washington County.

Hochul says the project has been in the works for a long time.

It’s part of the state’s goal to have 70% of our electricity from renewable sources by the year 2030.
