A group spent Monday calling attention to hunger, food and nutrition insecurity here in New York state.

The Alliance for a Hunger Free New York held a rally Monday at the state Capitol, ahead of Tuesday’s State Of The State Address.

They’re calling on Gov. Hochul to use the budget to fight food insecurity.

Assemblywoman Pat Fahy joined advocates, emphasizing there is bipartisan support for their cause.

“We do know food is fundamental. I like to say reading is fundamental, but certainly food is fundamental,” said Fahy. “Insecurity – we talk a lot about it in our schools. It’s difficult for a child to learn if they don’t feel safe and if they’re not feeling food security, so this is just so critical,” said Fahy.

The group says 2.1 million New Yorkers struggle with hunger, including one in six children.
