Improper trash disposal leads to smoke in Troy garbage truck

Be careful what you throw in your trash bin. That’s the message from Troy’s Department of Public Works.

They’re asking people to pay a little more attention. City sanitation employees on Wednesday saw heavy smoke coming from the trash compactor of a city owned garbage truck. They soon found a hazardous acidic liquid concealed in a black garbage bag.

Firefighters in April had to put out a fire inside a garbage truck caused by large rechargeable batteries.

These fires are preventable by keeping hazardous items out of curbside garbage cans. Those items include: chemicals, propane tanks, large batteries, rechargeable batteries, and acids.
