July 4th celebration draws hundreds of people at the Empire State Plaza

ALBANY, N.Y. (WNYT) – The annual tradition continued Thursday as crowds filled the Empire State Plaza to celebrate Independence Day.

Lance Hoppen, the co-founder of Orleans, said he was more than excited to be back performing on home turf.

“The crew I have now, the 5 quintets, I am very much pleased and proud with it, and I think everyone will really enjoy the show,” Hoppen said.

From the cheers of the crowd to the kids playing on the bouncy castle, there was enthusiasm everywhere.

“I think it’s just the environment is so welcoming and the music, and we enjoy the fireworks,” said a festival goer.

There was also a naturalization ceremony, where 16 people from 13 different countries had their special day as they were inducted as U.S. citizens.

“Yeah, I’m really excited because I know after a long journey, I got my citizenship,” said Artiful Islam of Bangladesh. “Today’s a special day. Independence Day for July. So happy 4th July for all.”
