Keeping pets safe during the holidays

A comprehensive look at local, statewide and national news events is provided by the NewsChannel 13 Team, along with updates on sports and the weather forecast.

To help keep pets safe this holiday season, the Veterinary Centers of America (VCA) has launched a Holiday Hazards Playbook to help pet parents learn what to avoid and how to stay safe. Last year, Nationwide Pet Insurance saw a spike in chocolate toxicity, alcohol, and pancreatitis claims for dogs and cats. Treatments for these can cost hundreds to even thousands of dollars.

The guide includes instructions on keeping the home safe and even offers national discounts for pet emergency room exams.

Michele Chin, Emergency and Critical Care Veterinarian at VCA, said pet parents shouldn’t just be aware of the dangers of chocolate to dogs. Things to consider can include the gifts that people might give, such as gift-wrapped chocolate.

“So be aware of what you’re putting under the tree. You can just ask your guest if there is anything edible,” Chin said. “So, things to be well aware of, especially for our dogs, because they like to eat and drink everything. We have to be careful of the water, even for the Christmas trees. And with kitty cats, we don’t want them anywhere near lilies because that can be deadly for them.”

The guide includes cheat sheets and tips to help make sure that your pet is also enjoying the holiday season with the family. And there are tips on how to help your pet during stressful moments.

“Our lovely furry friends can certainly get into many holiday hazards and dangers. I think it’s important to be aware of what is dangerous. Especially, open flame-burning candles are dangerous for them and our household,” Chin said. “We want to make sure to secure our trees. Put our tree skirt on, have pet-safe ornaments, and keep them up high as best as you can.”
