Large fight breaks out at Amsterdam High School

Police respond to large fight at Amsterdam school

Police respond to large fight at Amsterdam school involving around 20 juveniles.

A group of Amsterdam High School students were involved in a fight Monday that spilled over into the nearby Walmart parking lot, according to police.

The incident took place in the school commons area around 8:30 at the start of the school day.

No one required medical attention, according to police. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.

The school went into lockout mode during the incident, which lasted until about 10 a.m.

Superintendent of Schools Richard Ruberti said the district is meeting with representatives from law enforcement as well as county and city officials on Wednesday to discuss ways to address behavioral issues.

“Violence is never the answer and we do not tolerate it in our schools,” Ruberti said in a statement. “We want our community to know that the district takes these situations very seriously. We are committed to embracing a school culture where all students demonstrate respect for themselves, their peers, and staff.”

Amsterdam High School Principal Mike Gennett said this incident is not representative of the culture that the district wants for the school.

“We work tirelessly to make our school a safe and welcoming place for students, and we will continue to reinforce appropriate behavior and build a positive school climate,” he said in a statement.
