Passerby helps driver after explosion
A passerby helped the driver of the tractor-trailer right after the crash.
Peter Sweet, who lives in Glenville, said he was on his way back from the gym when he saw the smoke and flames from Glenridge Road. He stopped to see what was happening.
Sweet saw the driver was out of the truck and asked police if he could assist. The driver had burns to his cheek, forehead and severe burns to his hands, according to Sweet. He and a police officer treated the victim until the ambulance arrived.
“Instinct kicks in. You want to offer your assistance and provide the best care that you could,” Sweet said.
The driver, a 60-year-old from Texas, was taken to the Westchester Medical Center burn unit.
