Man runs stop sign, crashes into police car

PITTSFIELD – A driver who failed to stop at a stop sign caused a crash that injured three people and damaged an unmarked police cruiser in Pittsfield.

Lt. Marc Maddalena said that a 2020 Mercedes SUV operated by Jeffrey Leitman, of New York City and Lenox, Mass., was traveling south on Bartlett Avenue at about 2:49 p.m. on Aug. 31. He did not obey a stop sign at the intersection with East Housatonic Street and collided with a police vehicle driven by Hinsdale Police Sgt. Elizabeth Zipp.

The crash caused the SUV to roll onto its roof. The cruiser had significant front end damage, according to Maddalena. Leitman and his wife Louise, who was a passenger in the vehicle, and Zipp and her passenger, Officer Mathieu Mercier, were all taken to Berkshire Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.

Zipp had a cut on her right arm and Mercier complained of shoulder and neck pain, according to NewsChannel 13’s media partners at The Berkshire Eagle.  Both officers were expected to be back for their regular shifts.

Mr. Leitman was issued a citation for the stop sign violation.
