Move Over Law expanding to cover all vehicles
The Move Over Law is expanding to cover all types of vehicles.
The update going into effect on Wednesday, March 27 requires people to change lanes if they see someone stopped on the side of the highway.
The Move Over Law currently covers emergency vehicles as well as hazard vehicles, highway workers and tow trucks.
Thirty-seven people were killed outside disabled vehicles in New York from 2016 to 2020, said Hochul, with nearly 300 drivers killed nationwide each year.
The law is an expansion of the “Move Over Law,” which began in 2010 to prevent collisions with emergency vehicles stopped on the side of the road. It has since expanded to hazard vehicles, along with highway worker vehicles and tow trucks.
Under the law, you must change into a lane not immediately next to the vehicle, or slow down to a reasonable speed if you can’t change lanes.
