National Grid wants to help people avoid getting scammed.

They said customers need to protect their personal information and not give out account or Social Security information to people claiming to be National Grid.

In some cases, scammers use a practice called “spoofing” where the caller ID and return number will have National Grid’s name and correct phone number, the company said. Scammers also threaten to end services immediately.

National Grid said they will never demand direct payment through prepaid cards and will not threaten to immediately disconnect power.
