All businesses selling gift cards are now required to display a notice to warn people about gift card fraud.
Requesting gift cards as payment has become increasingly popular with scammers.
According to the federal trade commission, last year, nearly 65,000 people filed a complaint related to gift card scams, for a total loss of more than $228 million.
