New law will reimburse New Yorkers for kidney, liver donations
The “Donor Support Act” has been officially signed into law by Gov. Kathy Hochul.
It allows New Yorkers to be reimbursed for kidney and liver donations.
This is the first state program in the country, and works to eliminate financial barriers for organ donation, to reduce wait times for organ transplants. It also addresses the organ shortage in New York state.
There are currently 8,569 people on transplant wait lists, says the governor’s office. That includes 7,234 people who are awaiting a kidney.
