Oil leak at Cohoes Norlite plant under investigation

There has been an oil leak at the embattled Norlite plant in Cohoes.

It happened around 9:15 Thursday morning.

Around 200 gallons of waste oil leaked into the ground, with another 10,000 gallons contained before the leak was stopped, the Department of Environmental Conservation said.

The leak is blamed on an equipment failure.

DEC says there are no impacts to gas levels or air quality to anyone off-site. They continue to investigate.

Neighbors have worried in the past about the harmful emissions they said the plant is putting in the air.

A lawsuit filed back in November by the attorney general and DEC commissioner called for additional oversight and monitoring.
