The Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Department is making sure everyone is safe on the roads for the holiday.

Deputies hosted “Operation Santa Shield” on Wednesday. Officers checked people’s cars to make sure their seatbelts and registration were valid. They also surprised kids with gifts as a reward for waiting in line.

The Sheriff’s Department said it was in the name of spreading a safe driving spirit ahead of the holiday rush.
