Police: Amsterdam woman threw drug paraphernalia out window

Police arrested an Amsterdam woman after she allegedly threw drug paraphernalia out the window during a traffic stop.

Officers stopped a car on Division Street in Amsterdam at about 11 a.m. last Tuesday after spotting someone inside who was on a warrant. That person was arrested without issue.

One of the officers noticed that a passenger, later identified as Awilda Cortes, 36, threw something outside the vehicle.

Officers determined it was drug paraphernalia, police said. The car’s owner consented to a search and officers found crack cocaine.

Cortes was charged with a felony count of tampering with physical evidence and misdemeanors of criminal using drug paraphernalia and criminal possession of a controlled substance.

She was released on an appearance ticket and is due in Amsterdam City Court at a later date.
