Brooklyn man accused of having illegal cannabis plants

Brooklyn man accused of having illegal cannabis plants in the town of Amsterdam.

A Brooklyn man was arrested after police seized 2,200 cannabis plants from a building he owns in the town of Amsterdam.

Police and fire officials responded to a property on Chapman Drive after receiving a complaint about a strong smell of cannabis, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said.

The town fire inspector and sheriff’s investigators found a large-scale cannabis growing operation at the site on Friday. The plants were two to three feet tall, police said.

The building’s owner, Chuanjin Sun, 53, was allegedly growing a large amount of cannabis for distribution throughout the state. He did not have a permit, investigators said.

Sun was charged with criminal possession of cannabis and unlawfully growing cannabis. He was arraigned in Amsterdam Town Court and released on his own recognizance pending a future court date.
