A man who was walking on a sidewalk in Albany is dead after a drunken driver went off the road and hit him Monday evening. That’s according to Albany police.
Larry Cunningham, 62, of Albany died at the scene.
Police say 26-year-old Jose Guevara-Bonilla of Albany was speeding on Third Avenue around 6:15 p.m. when his car left the road and hit Cunningham. This happened near the intersection with Elizabeth Street.
An Albany detective in the area saw Guevara-Bonilla’s car speed off. The detective pulled the suspect over near Third Avenue and South Pearl Street.
Court documents say his blood alcohol level was 0.18. That’s more than twice the legal limit.
Guevara-Bonilla is facing a list of charges, including DWI and leaving the scene of a fatal accident. Police say he was also driving without a license. He pleaded not guilty Tuesday morning. A judge ordered him to be held without bail.
Police tell us the investigation is ongoing and more charges could come.
