Police: Schoharie County man tried to steal car with child inside
A Schoharie County man is accused of trying to steal a car at a gas station with a 1-year-old child in the vehicle.
It happened on June 16 just before 6:30 p.m. at the Kwik Fill gas station on Route 3 in the town of Volney in Chenango County. Ronald C. Canfield Jr, 35, of Fulton, allegedly drove erratically into the gas station behind a vehicle as the driver was pumping gas. He then jumped into the driver’s seat to try to steal the vehicle, State Police said.
However, the keys were not in the ignition, so Canfield left the scene in the vehicle he arrived in.
A trooper observed him blowing through a stop sign. Police attempted to stop the vehicle, but Canfield allegedly led him on a chase. He then pulled into a gas station and fled on foot.
Police used a Taser and eventually took him into custody.
Canfield was taken to Oswego Hospital, where he was treated and released.
He is facing a long list of charges including unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, reckless driving, resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration, attempted grand larceny and endangering the welfare of a child.
