A rare photo of an historic Capital Region baseball team has sold at auction for almost $20,000.

The photo of the 1871 Troy Haymakers went up for auction last week. The photo features Lipman Pike, who is the first great Jewish ballplayer and helped give rise to professionalism in organized baseball.

The Haymakers were part of the 1871 National Association, which was baseball’s first professional league.

Pike was one of the first players to be paid when he and two other teammates received a weekly salary of $20.

The photo was part of a collection of sports memorabilia that was up for auction at the Lelands Fall Classic Auction.
