Amtrak passengers could soon see sharp cuts to service in the Northeast, particularly on the popular Rensselaer to New York City route, according to a report from the Times Union.

The House of Representatives proposes spending reductions on train service.

One key congressional subcommittee called much of Amtrak’s spending “wasteful” according to summaries.

Members of a House Transportation Subcommittee recommended an allocation of $875 million last week for Amtrak in 2024 – down from the nearly $2.5 billion it currently receives.

Amtrak has said it needs at least $2.66 billion to meet basic operational needs.

The company has asked for $3.65 billion in funds for the upcoming fiscal year.
