Salem man arrested for assault of 10-month-old child who ingested cocaine at residence

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office says they made an arrest on Friday following an investigation into a 10-month-old child being hospitalized after ingesting cocaine.

Authorities say that Lucas J. Smith, 24, of Salem, New York was charged on various accounts after continued investigation.

The child came into contact with cocaine and ingested the drug at Smith’s residence, which resulted in a 911 call for assistance, said Sheriff Murphy.

The Sheriff’s Office said the child was taken to Glens Falls Hospital and transferred to Albany Medical Center in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).

Smith was charged with the following:

  • First-degree reckless endangerment
  • Second-degree assault
  • Second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance
  • Third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance
  • Third-degree criminal possession of a weapon
  • Two counts of criminal possession of a firearm
  • Endangering the welfare of a child

Authorities say Smith is being held at the Washington County Jail, awaiting arraignment at Centralized Arraignment and Washington County Court.
