One of two Saratoga County sheriff’s deputies shot during an early morning drug and weapons raid in Clifton Park on Tuesday morning continues to recover at Albany Medical Center. The other one is out of the hospital.

This is the first time in the history of Saratoga County that two deputies were shot on the same day, Sheriff Michael Zurlo said. Fortunately, both of them survived the gun battle.

The drama unfolded before sunrise Tuesday morning, when Anthony Zaremsky, 23, opened fire as the county’s Special Operations Team – along with federal drug enforcement agents – entered a unit at Fox Run Apartments where Zaremski was staying.

One deputy shot in the chest was saved by his body armor. He was treated and released from the hospital.

The other injured deputy underwent surgery Tuesday afternoon for a shattered femur.

It is being seen as much more than fortuitous that both deputies survived. It is considered a blessing that nothing worse happened to them.

Hear Zurlo talk about how first aid was also a big part of saving the deputies’ lives by watching the video of Dan Levy’s story.
