Coaches accused of abusive culture reappointed

The track-and-field coaches accused of abusive culture in Saratoga Springs athletics were reappointed.

The Saratoga Springs cross country coaches accused of creating an abusive athletic culture have been reappointed by the school district.

Art and Linda Kranick have been coaches with the district for decades. A group of former student-athletes and their parents sent a 77-page letter last October to the state Education Department requesting an investigation into district’s athletics program.

Among complaints were that players were forced to play through injuries and were bullied.

A law firm hired by the district found that the district acted appropriately in most instances, but said that “effective oversight” was not always in place regarding the cross country and track and field coaches.

The district said it planned to work with the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference to conduct an intensive review of the athletic program. It will also take a global review of coaches internal guidelines, policies and practices regarding training, promotion of academic achievement, modeling good sportsmanship and appropriate behavior, character development, ethics, values, living healthy and drug-free lifestyle.
