Schenectady man admits to girlfriend’s 2021 murder

A Schenectady man has pleaded guilty to murder.

Malcolm Gadsden admitted that he killed January Butcher on Dec. 23, 2021.

Gadsden will receive a life sentence with a minimum of 18 years to life in state prison as part of his plea agreement.

The investigation started when Gadsden called police on Christmas Eve 2021 saying he had just killed his girlfriend, the Schenectady County District Attorney’s Office said.

Schenectady Police located Butcher’s body inside Gadsden’s residence at 964 State St.

Gadsden was taken in, where he confessed to stabbing and choking her, killing her.

He is scheduled to be sentenced in Schenectady County Court on June 20.
