Singer Natalie Merchant joins fracking opponents at state Capitol
Environmental advocates got a little more star power in their fight to end CO2 fracking.
The group was joined by singer-songwriter Natalie Merchant at the state Capitol building in Albany on Tuesday to call on the Legislature to amend the current fracking ban law.
Describing herself as a lifelong New Yorker, Merchant said New Yorkers have to remain vigilant.
“We’ve had this feeling of protection, and this feeling, this grateful feeling that here in New York, we are protecting our critical resources, protecting the future health of our children,” said Merchant. “Not only did we have the ban, but now we have the subsequent law that enshrines these protections.”
Right now, the state’s fracking ban law does not prohibit using carbon dioxide to drill and extract natural gas and oil.
