State’s highest court to hear appeal of convicted double murderer

The case of a convicted double murderer in Albany is going before the state’s highest court.

Edward Mero was found guilty in 2017 of killing Shelby Countermine and Megan Cunningham. Mero’s case will go before the state Court of Appeals on Thursday. His attorneys argue that he didn’t get a fair trial.

It was revealed the prosecutor in the case at that time was doing outside legal work for Mero’s defense attorney during the trial. They also claimed the two cases should have been tried separately.

Mero has made the arguments before back in 2020, a lower court declined to vacate his conviction.
