Strategies to help children manage their emotions

It’s no doubt children are getting more screen time. But using video screens to babysit kids may be the wrong tool to use.

A pediatric psychologist says parents need to teach their child how to manage their emotions instead of trying to distract them.

The American Psychological Association has some strategies for parents and caretakers to help children manage their emotions.

They include talking about feelings when a child is a baby.
Point out in a book when a character feels sad or happy.

Also, children who have a secure, trusting relationship with their parents or caregivers have better emotion regulation.

And stay calm – if a parent or caregiver is about to lose their cool, take a minute to calm down before addressing a situation with a child.
