Timeline of Cohoes shooting case that resulted in Dontie Mitchell’s arrest

The shooting of Shieer Leggett has been a complicated case – one that has spanned more than six months.

Aug. 11, 2023: Cohoes Police investigate a shooting at the intersection of Main and Schuyler streets. The victim was Shieer Leggett. This was the first homicide in Cohoes in over three years, police said.

One week later, self-proclaimed anti-violence advocate Dontie Mitchell was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Mitchell was sent to the Albany County Correctional Facility. Before his arrest, Mitchell told NewsChannel 13 in an interview that he started the Money Gang Youth Empowerment Program. He said it was a not-for-profit organization designed to keep at-risk teens off the streets and away from guns.

Sept. 6, 2023: Two more people were arrested in connection to the Cohoes homicide.

  • Nalik Sealy was also charged with second-degree murder in an indictment. He pleaded not guilty in Albany County Court to murder, criminal possession of a weapon and two counts of reckless endangerment.
  • Tyon Baker was charged and pleaded guilty to criminal possession of a weapon.

December 13, 2023: Albany County Judge Andra Ackerman dismissed the murder charge against Mitchell, on the grounds there was insufficient evidence to support the indictment.
