Tractor-trailer crash severs Great Barrington pine tree

A tractor-trailer carrying cement slammed into a pine tree in Great Barrington on Friday.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was trying to avoid oncoming traffic on Route 23 near the Egremont town line, police tell our media partners at The Berkshire Eagle.

The driver was not hurt, said police, and no other cars were involved.

It’s rare to see no injuries when a tractor-trailer hits a tree, firefighters said.

Rescuers are using the crash to remind people to drive carefully when there are large trucks around.

“This is a prime example of why you should never pull out in front of a tractor-trailer,” wrote the Great Barrington Fire Department on Facebook. “The velocity and weight of the vehicle combine to obliterate a large pine tree – imagine what would happen if it was your car.”

Branches had to be cut to reopen the road.
