Troy Police investigating officer-involved shot-fired incident

Troy Police say there was an officer-involved single-shot fired incident Saturday afternoon involving a stolen vehicle fleeing the scene of a traffic stop.

Police say they observed a vehicle while on patrol around 1 p.m., which they recognized the vehicle as having been reported stolen on Friday night in the City of Troy.

Officers say they tried to stop the vehicle and the suspect, but the suspect fled the traffic stop in the vehicle.

The vehicle crossed the Waterford Bridge from Lansingburgh into Waterford, and while turning onto Division Street in Waterford, the vehicle struck a metal road sign and came to a stop nearby, said police.

Troy Police say one of their officers exited his patrol vehicle, and while approaching the suspect, the officer lost his footing and there was an unintentional discharge of the officer’s duty weapon.

Authorities say the suspect was taken into custody without further incident. Both the suspect and the officer were both transported to local area hospitals for evaluation.

The suspect sustained an injury to his lip during the incident and is expected to be discharged, said police.

Assistant Chief Barker says detectives are continuing the investigation and charges for the suspect are pending. He adds that detectives have already interviewed several witnesses.
