Rensselaer County is in need of an animal shelter to serve animals across the county. Two local leaders say they may have the solution.

Back in October, Mohawk Hudson Humane Society cut ties with 16 municipalities – including several towns in Rensselaer County.

The shelter said it no longer had the capacity to deal with the number of animals being brought in.

The town supervisors of Sand Lake and Poestenkill are now proposing the former County Waste site at the intersection of Route 351 and Route 66 as a possible location.

The plan is to build kennels to hold about a dozen dogs to start, with plans for expansion if there’s a need.

Other towns also expressed interest in collaborating with this idea.
