Vehicle strikes, kills pedestrian on Thruway in Bethlehem

A Greene County man was killed early Sunday morning after he was struck by a vehicle on the Thruway in Bethlehem. State Police responded to the southbound lane of the highway south of Exit 23 just before 2 a.m. The investigation determined that James R. Gibson Jr., 36, of West Coxsackie, was walking in the right lane of travel when he was struck, police said. The driver immediately stopped and called for help.

State Police responded to the southbound lane of the highway south of Exit 23 just before 2 a.m. The investigation determined that James R. Gibson Jr., 36, of West Coxsackie, was walking in the right lane of travel when he was struck, police said. The driver immediately stopped and called for help.

Gibson died at the scene.

The right lane was closed for about 5 ½ hours for the investigation and accident reconstruction.

The investigation is ongoing and the driver is cooperating.
