Victim relieved convicted sex offender has died in prison
A man who was a victim of a convicted sex abuser who just died in prison is speaking out.
As NewsChannel 13 reported, the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision confirmed. Louis VanWie died at 82.
VanWie admitted in Rensselaer County Court to molesting more than 100 children over a 40-year period.
Gary Greenberg was one of those victims, he said.
Greenberg was only 7 when VanWie inappropriately touched him in the 1960s, he said.
VanWie approached him in 1967 at the now-closed Cohoes Memorial Hospital while visiting his father, he said. He worked at the hospital and told Greenberg he was going to show him around the facility.
Instead, VanWie took him to the roof of the hospital, sexually abused him then threatened him, Greenberg said.
Greenberg’s personal trauma was a driver to advocate for the passage of the Child Victims Act.
