Austin Breyette, 25, has been charged with second-degree assault and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident as well as numerous traffic violations.

Breyette allegedly was speeding and weaving in and out of traffic on April 27, just after midnight, when he struck and seriously injured Alexa Kropf.

Breyette then left the scene. Police tracked him down and arrested him early Thursday morning.

Kropf had a shattered pelvis and brain injuries that required emergency surgery. She is facing a long road to recovery.

Her father, Jim Kropf, told NewsChannel 13 that she recently was transferred to a rehabilitation facility closer to home. He said that she has begun to speak a little bit, but is still struggling with words.

The prosecutor alleges that Breyette loaded his dirt bike onto his truck and drove it to Poughkeepsie. Breyette also allegedly tried to get rid of the clothes he was wearing that night.

After the hearing, Assistant Alternate Public Defender Kurt Haas did not want to comment on how Breyette was identified as the suspect or any other details about the case.

“These are still allegations right now, and I’m really not going to speak any more about any of the facts and circumstances of this case,” he said.

Bail was set at $100,000 cash, $100,000 bond or $200,000 partially secured bond. Breyette was sent to Albany County Jail.

Alexa Kropf’s father Jim Kropf issued a statement on the arrest of the suspect.

“We are relieved and grateful to the Albany Police Department for their swift and diligent efforts in apprehending the individual responsible for the hit-and-run incident involving our daughter. From the moment the incident occurred, we had full confidence in the Albany Police Department’s ability to bring the perpetrator to justice.

We cannot thank them enough for their unwavering pursuit of justice in this case.

Our daughter can now focus on her recovery, knowing that the responsible party will be held accountable.”

A GoFundMe campaign for Kropf has raised over $104,000 as of Friday afternoon.
