West Nile virus has been detected in Berkshire County.

Samples of mosquitoes tested in Pittsfield tested positive for the virus, according to the Massachusetts Department of Health.

They have some tips for residents there to avoid mosquito bites:

  • When outside, wear long pants, long sleeves, and socks.
  • Use a repellent with DEET.
  • Try to be inside during the hours between dusk and dawn, when mosquitos are most active.
  • Remove areas of standing water around your home twice a week to eliminate sources of mosquito breeding.
