Assemblyman says late son is helping others live through organ donation
Supporters at the Capitol gather to express support of efforts for organ donation.
April is “Donate Life Month.”
Organ donation saved nearly 3,300 New Yorkers last year.
Leaders are raising awareness about the importance of this gift.
Among them is New York State Assemblyman Robert Smullen. His 14-year-old son AJ tragically died in March, after being hit by a car in February.
“We’ve since learned that he’s affected five families here in New York, and that his gift is helping others live,” Smullen said.
Nearly 8,000 New Yorkers are on the waitlist for a life-changing organ. People in New York have some catching up to do in terms of organ donation, Smullen said.
