Be careful if deciding to fry the turkey

Be careful when frying turkeys

Be careful when frying turkeys. Among tips are to slowly drop the turkey into the hot oil. And don't put a frozen turkey in the oil.

People are advised to be careful if they are planning to fry the turkey this year.

Experts say more home cooking fires happen on Thanksgiving than any other day and that the key to turkey frying is the prep.

The safest way is to cook the turkey inside of the oven. However, there are some tips for safe frying.

Put the thawed-out turkey in the fryer and then fill it up with water. Then, mark the inside of the fryer to determine how much oil to put in, according to Winston-Salem Assistant Fire Marshal Quincy Jackson Sr.

“Once you’ve determined how much oil to put in by measuring it with water, you take the turkey out, dump the water out. Dry it real good. Put the turkey back in,” he said

Put the thawed-out turkey slowly in the oil. If you are outside, make sure you are 10 feet from the building.

If you plunge a frozen turkey into overheated oil, it could cause an explosion.
