Dietician urges caution on sports drinks
Not everything in sports drinks is healthy
Not everything found in sports drinks is healthy.
Julia Zumpano, a registered dietician with the Cleveland Clinic, said electrolytes play an important role in overall health that help with the function of our brain, heart muscles and nerves.
However, she said it is best to skip the sports drinks. She advises using a powdered version without dyes or loads of added sugar to add to water.
“I think that it’s important if you are going to choose an electrolyte replacer enhanced beverage, you look at the other ingredients,” she said.
Zumpano said people can get electrolytes by eating a healthy diet rich in whole foods.
