FDA approves drug to help with food allergies
The FDA has approved a new drug to reduce allergic reactions from foods – including peanuts.
Researchers found the drug Xolair, which is normally prescribed for asthma, could also help with food allergies.
Two-thirds of patients who were injected with Xolair were able to eat two and a half peanuts without having a severe allergic reaction.
The drug works by targeting antibodies that patients with food allergies make, acting like a sponge to take them out of circulation.
Doctors hope FDA approval will make the drug more accessible and affordable to patients.
