FDA updates mammography guidelines

The FDA is now requiring mammogram facilities to notify women if they have dense breast tissue. This may lead to additional screening for breast cancer.

Current guidelines from the American Cancer Society say a woman with an average risk should get a yearly mammogram starting at age 40, but there are not specific guidelines for women with dense breasts.

For one Chicago woman with dense breasts, the mammogram didn’t detect her cancer. She’s grateful her doctor also ordered a bilateral ultrasound.
