Hand-painted ceiling tiles calm patients at New Jersey hospital

Patients going in for an ultrasound, CAT Scan, or biopsy at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey can look up for inspiration, calm and even a laugh.

One ultrasound room features Mickey Mouse and Scooby Doo.

A CAT scan room has The Simpsons.

Other tiles urge the patient to “never give up.” The bright, cheerful messages can lessen anxiety for children and adults.

The hand-painted custom ceiling tiles were created by students at Garfield High School, who later visited the hospital to see their creations on display.

The art students worked for a month last summer creating more than two-dozen ceiling tiles. Each of the students had a unique interpretation about what they thought a patient in the hospital might enjoy.
