Health officials say fake Botox treatments may be linked to botulism-like illnesses.

Botulism is caused by a toxin that attacks the body’s nerves and causes difficulty breathing and muscle paralysis.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration are investigating the illnesses from injections given in non-medical settings.

There have been 12 confirmed or suspected cases, NBC News reported, with four people hospitalized.
